BORN

Bai Y, Hunt CD. Boron improves body weight of broiler chickens, possible evidence of boron essentiality. N.D. Proc ND Acad Sci 49:22, 1995.

The role of boron in human health is not well understood, even though it is known to be essential for most plants. We have some evidence that boron is important for bone growth. Therefore, day-old broiler chicks were fed diets naturally very low in boron and vitamin D to which boron (at about the concentration found in human diets) and vitamin D (inadequate to adequate) were added. Extra boron improved body weight of chicks fed a marginal amount of vitamin D but had no effects on those fed none or adequate amounts of vitamin D. In a second experiment, extra boron improved body weight of chicks fed either marginal or adequate amounts of vitamin D but had no effects on those fed no additional amount of vitamin D. Extra boron also improved chick mobility and increased serum ionized calcium of chicks fed marginal amounts of vitamin D. These findings suggest that boron is needed for animal growth and that boron is needed for the proper use of vitamin D.
